Luminous Mysteries

Opening prayers

Sign of the Cross

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Pray three Hail Marys: for faith, hope, and charity.

1 / 5 · The Baptism of Jesus

The first Luminous Mystery: The Baptism of Jesus.

Jesus is baptized in the Jordan River. God the Father calls Him His beloved Son. (Matthew 3:13–17)

Scripture

Matthew 3:13–17
16 Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him. 17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
(Obedience): Let us ask for the grace to listen to God and do what He asks, as Jesus did.

Amen.

2 / 5 · The Wedding at Cana

The second Luminous Mystery: The Wedding at Cana.

At a wedding, Mary asks Jesus to help. He turns water into wine. (John 2:1–11)

Scripture

John 2:1–12
3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no wine.” 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the water pots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the ruler of the feast.” So they took it. 11 This beginning of his signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
(Trust in God): Let us ask for the grace to bring Him our worries and trust His care, even when we do not know what will happen.

Jesus shines with bright light before Peter, James, and John. God the Father tells them to listen to Him. (Matthew 17:1–8)

Scripture

Matthew 17:1–8
1 After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain by themselves. 2 He was changed before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light.

Jesus gives His Body and Blood at the Last Supper. (Matthew 26:26–28)

Scripture

Luke 22:14–20
19 He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” 20 Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Closing prayers

Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! Our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley, of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
OPTIONAL PRAYER

Memorare

Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee O virgin of virgins and mother. To thee do I come. Before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the word incarnate, despise not my petitions but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Final Prayer

Let us pray. O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
